Not long ago I got into a disagreement with a friend who was up in arms because those horrible Christians think he is a sinner and that he needs Jesus to be saved, but he insisted that he was not a sinner and could get to heaven on his own. He didn't want to be told that he needed any help to get there. this is how I explained it for him:
Three men went swimming in the ocean, went out too far and were caught in the current. As they were wearing out, sputtering in the waves and thrashing to stay above water, the lifeguard reached them.
As the lifeguard reached the first man he said, "Relax, stop thrashing, lie back against me and hold my arm. I will take you to shore."
The first man refused and said,"No, because when we get to shore the people will say,'Look the lifeguard has saved that man from drowning.' I was the one who had to relax, lie back, and hold on to your arm. I should have credit for saving myself. I will be my own lifeguard, I don't want or need your help."
He then pushed away from the lifeguard and sank to his death.
The second man also refused saying,"You are the lifeguard, I do not have to do anything to be saved, you should just save me."
He continued to thrash until he too sank beneath the waves.
The third man saying,"Oh thank you, God!" leaned back into the lifeguards grasp and held to his arm and he was pulled to safety.
